To date, my career has covered just short of 20 years and, like some of the other NNG SG members, I started my career as an apprentice and in this case it was via a shipbuilding company as a welder.

After completing the first part of my apprenticeship, I moved into technical services and took up a QC inspection role with a small manufacturing company, who fabricated pipelines for the neighboring oil and gas site. I ultimately took on the site lead inspectors role a few years later and was responsible for looking after a 256 acre site for general day to day maintenance, project related works and major shutdown of sections of the plant areas.

In my desire for greater experience and knowledge, I moved away from the oil and gas sector in to Nuclear, where I have stayed for a large portion of my career, gaining experience and becoming competent in the other areas of quality such as: Quality Assurance, Auditing and Quality management.

I now work for a Tier 2 company as a Quality Manger working directly for site licence clients within and outside of the UK and on a day-to-day basis deal with Quality Assurance, leadership, governance and improvement internally and within our supply chain.

Some of my best attributes are structure and organisation, problem solving and improvement and the need for compliance. These skills coupled with a good memory and a keen eye make the profession a good fit for me and most importantly one I enjoy each and every day.

Life is full of challenges and I can honestly say that quality is one of them but it can also be very rewarding when you are able to change stubborn cultures and behaviors for the better in our need for continual improvement and compliance.

I was asked to join the nuclear special interest group (NucSIG) under the CQI initially as a next generation member to facilitate communication with the next generation of quality professional. After some thought, we have created the nuclear next generation (NNG) as a sub group to specifically target the next generation of quality professionals in various groups from school and university leavers to people in other sectors wanting to migrate and transfer their skills.

I am passionate about helping the current demographic and skills shortage issues being faced by the sector and I personally wanted to make a difference so I created the NNG that others are now also part of to ensure we communicate and inspire people to join the profession, sector and group to make a difference moving forward.
