What is important about Project Quality in the Nuclear sector? Session 2
This was a follow-up event again considering the challenges of managing quality within projects in the nuclear sector and also understanding how we can attract and manage Quality Apprentices in our businesses.
The event at Nuvia Harwell seen speakers from Nuvia, Balfour Beatty, Sellafield, Taylor Woodrow, Jacobs & James Fisher and was kindly hosted by Nuvia. http://www.nuvia.co.uk/
Reassuringly the messages again carried a common theme recognising the special culture and understanding of connectivity to nuclear safety needed in the sector.
NucSIG's new group the Nuclear Next generation (NNG) also presented during the day to give a breakdown why it was important to attract the next generation of Quality professionals which was well received by all who attended.
In the afternoon attendees split into working groups to discuss how best to attract and retain new talent to the sector and to cover the issues such as demograpic and skills shortage.

What is important about Project Quality in the Nuclear sector?
The event was held at the Birchwood Science Park near Warrington on 21st March 2018, entitled “What is important about Project Quality in the Nuclear sector?” The event which was kindly sponsored by Cavendish Nuclear and opened by their Technical Director, Tony Handley.
The well attended event heard presentations by John Taylor, Cavendish Nuclear Head of Quality Operations, Amanda McKay and Tim Shuttleworth from Balfour Beatty and Paul Murphy from the Office for Nuclear Regulation who gave their perspective on nuclear project quality challenges and approaches.
Reassuringly the messages carried a common theme recognising the special culture and understanding of connectivity to nuclear safety needed in the sector.
It is important to look over the fence every now and again, so it was refreshing to understand how projects are tackled in the water industry with a presentation from John Hilton, the Project Director for West Cumbria United Utilities which is another sector which holds its’ responsibility for public safety paramount.
In the afternoon attendees split into working groups to discuss quality professional competency in nuclear projects and how NucSIG should contribute to “Context” content in the future. The output from this will be used by the Steering Group in the coming months.
The event was chaired by Mike Underwood, the Chair of NucSIG, who announced that he is handing over this role into the capable hands of Amanda McKay, familiar to many as a member of the CQI Board of Trustees.
Many thanks indeed to John Taylor, MCQI, CQP, the Cavendish Nuclear Head of Quality Operations and his team for organising and funding the event.
